In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the management of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to broaden its focus by offering interest-free loans to Nigerian students seeking skill-development programs. The directive was given during a meeting at the State House on Monday, following a comprehensive briefing by Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Executive Secretary of NELFUND, regarding the imminent launch of this pioneering initiative later in the month.
Acknowledging the diverse talents and aspirations of young Nigerians, President Tinubu emphasized the need for the loan scheme to cater to those who may choose not to pursue traditional university education. He highlighted the equal importance of skill acquisition alongside academic qualifications at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
“This is not an exclusive program; it is designed to benefit all our young people. The youth of Nigeria possess various gifts and talents in different areas. This initiative is not limited to those aspiring to become doctors, lawyers, or accountants. It is equally tailored for individuals who aim to contribute to the nation’s progress through the application of their skilled and trained hands. In alignment with this vision, I have instructed NELFUND to explore every avenue to incorporate skill-development programs, recognizing that not everyone wishes to undergo a full university education,” President Tinubu stated during the announcement.
The decision to extend financial support to students pursuing skill-development programs aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse educational landscape. The forthcoming launch of the program is anticipated to provide greater opportunities for aspiring students across various fields, reinforcing the nation’s emphasis on a holistic approach to education and development.
