President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a campaign aimed at promoting inclusive education, skill development, and gender equity in Nigeria. The campaign, known as #WeAreEqual, is an initiative spearheaded by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and has already been launched in 15 African countries with a focus on various facets including health, education, economic empowerment, and gender-based violence.
In Nigeria, the program is titled ‘Education as a Powerful Tool for Change’ and is championed by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON. President Tinubu commended the commitment of African First Ladies within OAFLAD to drive gender equality initiatives across the continent during the launch ceremony held at the State House.
President Tinubu emphasized the critical importance of education as a means to achieve gender equity and ensure equal opportunities for all, particularly highlighting the need to prioritize access to quality education for the girl child. He expressed his appreciation for the First Lady’s dedication to this cause and underscored the significance of initiatives like the re-introduction of the Alternative High School for Girls, which offers a second chance for girls who have dropped out of school.
Drawing from his experience as former governor of Lagos State, President Tinubu emphasized the societal challenges hindering the progress of young girls and stressed the pivotal role education plays in national development. He called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders to eliminate structural inequalities and empower women and girls, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending gender-based violence and increasing educational opportunities for girls, emphasizing the importance of creating safe and conducive learning environments. He highlighted ongoing government initiatives such as the Student’s Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act and a non-repayable grant program for Nigerians engaged in Nano businesses and skilled trades.
In closing, President Tinubu urged collective action to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to quality education, empowering women and girls to lead and effect positive change in their communities. He officially launched the #WeAreEqual Campaign in Nigeria, encouraging fruitful deliberations and welcoming participants to the country.
