President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, who lost their lives in a coordinated terrorist attack on their base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, resulting in the deaths of several military personnel as troops repelled the assault.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described the slain soldiers as national heroes who paid the ultimate price in defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity. He commended their courage in resisting attempts by terrorists to overrun their position and communities under their protection.
The President extended condolences to the families of the deceased and the Armed Forces, noting that the sacrifices of the fallen would not be forgotten.
According to him, ongoing military operations across theatres of conflict have continued to record successes, with many insurgents and commanders neutralised. He described the latest attack as a “desperate counteroffensive” by terrorist elements under pressure.
President Tinubu also urged the leadership of the Armed Forces and troops on the frontline not to be discouraged, but to remain steadfast in their mission to eliminate terrorism and restore lasting peace across the country.
“Our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents,” he said. “Their sacrifices will not be in vain. Our resolve to defeat terrorism and all forms of violence across Nigeria is stronger than ever.”
He further assured the military of continued government support, including improved equipment and welfare packages for personnel engaged in frontline operations.
The President appealed to Nigerians and the media to continue supporting the military, urging restraint in commentary that could undermine morale. He described the fallen troops as “unforgettable and irreplaceable heroes.”
Tinubu also commiserated with the government and people of Borno State, pledging continued collaboration between federal and state authorities to achieve lasting peace in the region.
