Tinubu set to attend COP28 climate summit in Dubai

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart from Abuja on Wednesday for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to participate in the COP28 Climate Summit, officially known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28).

The World Leaders’ Summit, occurring on December 1 and 2, 2023, will operate under the theme “Unite, Act, and Deliver.” During this summit, President Tinubu is slated to deliver a national statement, shedding light on Nigeria’s stance on crucial thematic issues, including renewable energy and climate financing.

Given Nigeria’s vulnerability to climate change, manifesting in challenges such as desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and associated national security risks, President Tinubu aims to leverage this platform to advocate for increased financial and technical assistance to developing nations. Additionally, he will remind developed countries of their commitment to provide $100 billion annually for supporting localized initiatives addressing climate change-related challenges.

In an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Chief Ajuri Ngelale said President Tinubu’s message will underscore Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices, emphasizing accountability for businesses and institutions. The Nigerian delegation to COP28 will actively explore the establishment of new and more profound bilateral partnerships to implement initiatives like Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.

During his stay in Dubai, President Tinubu will actively participate in key sideline events aimed at advancing his commitment to aggressively attract foreign direct investment, contributing to enhanced wealth creation and revenue expansion in Nigeria. The President will also partake in various events hosted by the Nigerian delegation.

Accompanied by senior government officials, President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja upon the conclusion of the summit.
