President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC), a strategic body tasked with driving the coordinated implementation of the Federal Government’s new tax laws.
According to a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the committee will be chaired by Joseph Tegbe, a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), with over 35 years of public and private sector experience, including as former Senior Partner and Head of Advisory at KPMG Africa.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, will supervise the committee’s activities, while Mrs Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, will serve as Secretary. Other members include Ismaeel Ahmed and Rukaiya El-Rufai, among several experts drawn from tax administration, finance, law, civil society, and the private sector.
President Tinubu stated that the committee’s creation underscores his administration’s commitment to a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses.
“These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a system that supports growth while safeguarding the expectations of investors and the productive sectors,” the President said. “The NTPIC will ensure coherent and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government.”
The committee will embark on nationwide consultations with professional bodies, private sector groups, subnational governments, and other stakeholders to ensure broad input into the implementation process. It will also carry out public awareness campaigns to aid a smooth transition to the new tax regime.
A major part of its mandate includes strengthening inter-agency coordination by harmonising existing frameworks with new statutes, improving oversight, and ensuring unified reporting among revenue and regulatory bodies.
Speaking on the committee’s readiness, Tegbe assured of diligent work toward advancing national development. “We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work with all stakeholders to support the Finance Minister in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust in the tax system,” he said.
Minister Wale Edun added that the establishment of the committee provides the direction and authority needed to reset the nation’s tax and fiscal policy framework.
The NTPIC is expected to boost revenue mobilisation, reduce leakages, enhance accountability, and strengthen fiscal sustainability in support of national development goals.
