Addressing a delegation of African Ministers of Solid Minerals, led by Mr. Dele Alake, Chairman of the African Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), at the State House, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of defending Africa against illegal exploiters of its mineral resources.
“We will lead the continent to self-realization on the value of our minerals and economic ingenuity, and this will occur as we free it from undue exploitation and abuse,” stated President Tinubu.
Mr. Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals, noted that the AMSG was formed in response to the “divide and rule tactics” weakening Africa’s negotiating power in the global market. He highlighted the importance of African unity, especially in light of the global energy transition which demands critical metals predominantly found in Africa.
Mr. Alake cited a recent conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where African leaders recognized the need to collaborate to prevent continued exploitation. “If we do not come together and speak with one voice, those who have exploited Africans for centuries will continue to do so,” he remarked.
He emphasized that uniform policies across African nations would prevent investors from exploiting divisions, ensuring a fair valuation of Africa’s natural assets. “The issue of divide and rule, which has been a mechanism used to exploit our continent for centuries, will no longer be tenable,” Mr. Alake concluded.
