Tinubu visits Saint Lucia, heads to Brazil for BRICS summit

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday, June 28, 2025, for official visits to Saint Lucia and Brazil, aimed at deepening Nigeria’s diplomatic and economic ties.

According to Special Adviser to the President Information and Strategy on Bayo Onanuga, in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will embark on a state visit as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with Caribbean nations and promote South-South cooperation. He is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Governor-General Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister Philip Pierre.

A key highlight of the visit includes his address to a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Parliament at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom in Gros Islet. Attendees will include the Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), top officials, diplomats, and members of the Nigerian community.

Tinubu will also host a working luncheon with OECS leaders focused on deepening economic partnerships and cultural ties. Additionally, he will visit Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries to promote educational collaboration and academic exchange.

The visit aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to engaging the African diaspora as part of the African Union’s Sixth Region initiative and is expected to open avenues for cooperation in infrastructure, education, youth empowerment, and diplomacy.

Following his engagements in Saint Lucia, Tinubu will travel to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, holding in Rio de Janeiro from July 6–7, 2025. He is attending at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva under Nigeria’s status as a BRICS “partner country”—a designation above guest status but short of full membership.

The summit, themed “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” will focus on social, economic, and environmental development through BRICS partnerships.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials on both legs of the trip.
