Tragic gas explosion at Ojokoro residence leaves four-years-old in critical condition at LASUTH

In a distressing incident at Ojokoro, Lagos, a 4-year-old girl is fighting for her life at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) following a cooking gas explosion at her parents’ residence. Three adults, identified as her grandparents and uncle, are currently undergoing burn care as a result of the tragic incident.

The explosion occurred when an attempt to control a flaming oil while frying meat led to the eruption of the cooking gas. The grandmother, who is in severe pain, provided an account of the incident to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Community members acted promptly to rescue the young girl, demonstrating swift and commendable response.

Tragically, the aftermath of the explosion resulted in the collapse of the entire 14-room building, rendering 11 families homeless. The landlord, Pa Femi Odubanwo Solomon, narrowly escaped the disaster and is currently seeking refuge in a local church.

In a parallel incident at Abule Egba, a market fire broke out, affecting numerous shops and vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this separate incident.

The Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and his medical team have mobilized assistance efforts for the victims, providing support to those affected by both the gas explosion and the market fire. The affected families and individuals are now grappling with the immediate challenges posed by the destruction of their homes and businesses.

These unfortunate events underscore the need for heightened safety measures and awareness in handling cooking appliances to prevent such tragic incidents. Authorities are expected to conduct thorough investigations into both incidents to determine the causes and identify preventive measures for future occurrences.
