Troops apprehend IPOB/ESN commander in Enugu, recovers arms and ammunition

Troops from Sector 1 Exercise GOLDEN DAWN III, in collaboration with various security agencies, successfully apprehended Mr. Uchechukwu Akpa, a high-ranking commander of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The operation, conducted on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, was prompted by credible intelligence indicating their presence at a hideout within Christ the King Catholic Church in Ameta Mgbowo, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

This significant arrest transpired during a raid on their hideout, where the individuals were convening a meeting to assume leadership of the IPOB/ESN Auto Pilot Command Enugu State Chapter following the apprehension of the former commander, known as “Chocho.” Additionally, the group was plotting attacks on security forces. In the course of the operation, Mr. Uchechukwu Akpa sustained a gunshot wound while attempting to flee. Accompanying him in custody are Udoka Anthony Ude, Ikechukwu Ulanta, and Ezennaya Udeigewere. The security forces also recovered four live cartridges during the operation.

It is noteworthy that Mr. Uchechukwu Akpa previously served as the Second in Command to “Chocho,” a notorious criminal associated with IPOB/ESN who had earlier evaded capture and sought refuge in Benue State. The captured individuals are currently held in custody for further investigation.

In a subsequent raid conducted early on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at another hideout in Nenwe, Agwu Local Government Area of Enugu State, the security forces seized One AK-47 Rifle, Two AK-47 Magazines, 25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO special ammunition, and one Pump action rifle.

Major General HT Dada, the GOC 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, expresses appreciation for the remarkable cooperation of other security agencies in ensuring the success of these operations. He urges the residents of the South East region to continue supporting and providing timely, reliable, and credible information through the Emergency Line 193 to facilitate the arrest of more unscrupulous elements. The Nigerian Army remains committed to protecting the lives and property of the people in the South East region, adhering to its constitutional duties within the bounds of the law. Wishing everyone a joyful yuletide season.
