Troops of 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN have dismantled a notorious car-snatching syndicate operating in Plateau State, neutralising two armed robbers and recovering weapons and stolen items during a series of operations in Jos.
The breakthrough occurred on 28 April 2025 during a routine patrol near the Federal Low-Cost Estate in Jos South Local Government Area. Troops intercepted an ash-coloured Opel Vectra with two occupants at Lalong Gate. Upon sighting the troops, the driver attempted to flee but was swiftly stopped.
While being questioned, the driver suddenly tried to escape by running over a patrol motorcycle. In response, troops neutralised him. The second suspect was apprehended and during preliminary interrogation, confessed to being part of a vehicle theft syndicate. He admitted arriving from Katsina State a day earlier specifically for car-snatching operations in Jos.
A search of the vehicle revealed an identity card from a security agency, allegedly used to bypass security checks, as well as several master keys used for stealing cars.
Following the arrest, troops conducted a follow-up raid at the suspects’ hideout in Corner Shagari, Angwan Rogo area of Jos North LGA. There, a fabricated pistol was discovered hidden in the ceiling. The suspect volunteered to lead troops to another accomplice but attempted to disarm a soldier during the operation. He was neutralised in the process.
According to Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer for Operation SAFE HAVEN, troops are intensifying operations to track down other members of the syndicate and ensure the safety of residents across Plateau State.
