Troops of 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, operating under Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP), have disrupted a suspected gunrunning syndicate and recovered arms and ammunition in Plateau State.
Confirming the report Media Information Officer, JTF Operation ENDURING PEACE Major Samson Natip Zhakom said the intelligence-led operation was carried out in the early hours of December 24, 2025, at Vom in Jos South Local Government Area, as part of sustained efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of action and ensure a peaceful yuletide within the Joint Operations Area.
During the raid, troops arrested three suspected gunrunners and recovered two locally fabricated AK-47 rifles, one round of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, two knives, and three mobile phones.
However, while withdrawing from the area, the troops reportedly encountered resistance from some women and youths who blocked the road, fired at the soldiers, and pelted personnel and operational vehicles with stones. In the ensuing encounter, one officer sustained injuries, while a Hilux vehicle radiator and the windscreen of a gun truck were damaged. The situation was swiftly brought under control, with troops maintaining discipline throughout the engagement.
The arrested suspects and recovered items are currently in military custody for further investigation, while follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate and prevent any attempt at regrouping.
According to the Joint Task Force, the operation underscores its resolve to dismantle criminal supply chains and curb the proliferation of illicit weapons that pose a threat to public safety.
The JTF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property within the Joint Operations Area and warned individuals and groups against obstructing troops in the performance of their lawful duties, stressing that such actions constitute serious security breaches and will be addressed in accordance with the law.
