Troops of the Operation Whirl Stroke have dislodged a suspected terrorist syndicate operating in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, recovering a cache of ammunition and logistics during a raid on the group’s hideout.
The operation was carried out by troops of Sector 1 following credible intelligence on the activities of a notorious bandit leader reportedly operating from Mtan Village in Utange Council Ward of Katsina-Ala LGA.
Acting on the intelligence, the troops advanced to the identified location and engaged the armed suspects in a gun duel. The criminals were forced to flee after what security sources described as a fierce exchange of gunfire.
A subsequent sweep of the area led to the recovery of two motorcycles believed to belong to the fleeing bandit leader, eight magazines, 162 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm special ammunition, 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition, 44 rounds of 9mm ammunition, links of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and seven empty 7.62mm NATO cartridge casings. A red Toyota vehicle found at the scene was also demobilised to prevent its further use for criminal activities.
The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Moses Gara, commended the intelligence unit for providing timely and actionable information that facilitated the operation. He also lauded the troops for their professionalism and tactical efficiency in confronting the armed syndicate.
Major General Gara emphasised the need for sustained collaboration between security agencies and local communities, urging residents to continue providing credible information to authorities. He noted that timely intelligence remains critical to countering terrorism and other criminal activities in the Benue axis.
Security operations in the area are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and consolidate recent gains.
