Troops of the 12 Brigade, operating under the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, have foiled a planned kidnapping operation and neutralised a suspected terrorist during a successful ambush in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The operation, carried out on May 30, 2026, followed credible intelligence indicating that armed criminal elements were planning to launch kidnapping activities in Jakura II Community.
Acting on the intelligence, the troops swiftly deployed to a suspected terrorist crossing point along the Old Obajana–Tajimi Road, where they established an ambush position to prevent the criminals from carrying out their planned operation.
According to the Nigerian Army, the troops made contact with the suspects during the operation and engaged them in a firefight. One terrorist was neutralised, while other members of the group reportedly escaped with suspected gunshot wounds.
Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a bandolier, and mobile phones. Military authorities said the recovered items further confirmed the group’s involvement in kidnapping activities within the area.
The Army described the operation as a demonstration of the resolve of troops of the 12 Brigade to sustain offensive operations against terrorists and other criminal elements threatening the security of law-abiding citizens. It added that follow-up operations are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, commended the troops for their vigilance, combat efficiency, and commitment to duty. He reaffirmed the Brigade’s determination to maintain pressure on terrorists and criminal groups operating within its area of responsibility.
The Brigade Commander also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and actionable intelligence to enhance efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
