Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have repelled a major attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, when a large number of terrorists launched an assault aimed at overrunning the military position.
The troops responded with sustained and effective firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
According to the Theatre Command, several terrorists were neutralised during the engagement, while troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication equipment from the operational area.
A post-engagement review of surveillance footage also confirmed that the retreating terrorists evacuated several casualties from the battlefield.
The recovered items and surveillance footage are undergoing further operational assessment as the military continues to determine the extent of losses suffered by the terrorists.
The Theatre Command disclosed that a few soldiers sustained injuries during the attack after part of the defensive position was temporarily breached.
It said some combat equipment and vehicles were also damaged by Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) fire during the assault.
The injured personnel were promptly evacuated by air and are currently stable and receiving medical treatment, the statement said.
Following the attack, troops reinforced their positions in and around the FOB and adjoining areas to maintain dominance, monitor developments and prevent any further attempt by the terrorists to re-engage.
The military urged residents of Gajiram and neighbouring communities to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, while calling on members of the public to report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agency.

The Theatre Command said troops remained on high alert in and around Gajiram, while exploitation of the operational area and further assessment of terrorist casualties and activities continued.
