Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled a major coordinated terrorist attack on Chibok communities in Borno State, preventing what could have been a large-scale assault on the area.
The attack, launched by more than 300 terrorists from multiple directions around 2:50 a.m. on Friday, was repelled by soldiers of the 28 Task Force Brigade, who were already on alert following early intelligence reports. According to the Army, the troops swiftly took battle positions and engaged the insurgents in a fierce gunfight that lasted over two hours, stopping them from infiltrating nearby towns.
As daylight approached, the terrorists began a chaotic withdrawal toward the Azir axis of Sambisa Forest, attempting to cross the Damboa–Biu Main Supply Route. The Army deployed 25 Brigade to pre-designated ambush locations near Azir Bridge, supported by surveillance from a Nigerian Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, to intercept the fleeing insurgents.
The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai also joined the operation, deploying a Super Tucano aircraft to provide air interdiction. The combined ground and air efforts forced the terrorists to scatter, with troops disrupting their escape routes.
The Army confirmed that no personnel or equipment was lost during the operation, describing it as a testament to the troops’ combat readiness, professionalism, and resilience.
Exploitation operations around Chibok were ongoing at press time, with security forces intensifying efforts to track down escapees and restrict their movement. The Army disclosed that footage of the terrorists’ mass withdrawal has been recovered and is under analysis for further operational planning.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
