UBTH hosts accreditation team, earns commendation

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has received commendation from the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria following an accreditation inspection of its facilities.

The inspection, conducted over two days from April 21 to 22, 2026, focused on evaluating the hospital’s infrastructure, personnel, and equipment, with particular attention to the Physiotherapy Department as part of the board’s accreditation process.

Speaking during the visit, the Chief Delegate, Olugbenga Popoola, praised the hospital’s management for fostering a strong collaborative environment. He also highlighted key improvements, including the provision of dedicated walkways for physiotherapy services and the overall quality of patient care.

Popoola further noted the availability of essential equipment and modern rehabilitation tools, describing them as critical to enhancing patient recovery outcomes. He commended the hospital’s workforce capacity, despite challenges posed by ongoing migration of healthcare professionals.

While acknowledging these strengths, the accreditation team identified areas requiring improvement, particularly in administrative and operational processes.

Responding on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Emmanuel Osaigbovo, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, expressed appreciation to the delegation for its detailed assessment and constructive feedback. He conveyed the gratitude of the Chief Medical Director, Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, and assured that the hospital would implement necessary measures to address the observations raised.

Osaigbovo reiterated UBTH’s commitment to strengthening its systems and maintaining high standards of care, expressing confidence that the Physiotherapy Department would meet all requirements for full accreditation in subsequent evaluations.

The visit underscores ongoing efforts by UBTH to align with national standards in medical rehabilitation services and improve healthcare delivery outcomes.
