The United Kingdom Government has awarded prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 68 Nigerians for postgraduate studies in the UK, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s human capital and developing the country’s next generation of leaders.
The beneficiaries, selected through highly competitive application and interview processes, will pursue master’s and PhD programmes across various disciplines during the 2026 academic session. Pre-departure receptions were held in Abuja and Lagos to honour the scholars ahead of their departure.
Of the 68 beneficiaries, 12 secured Chevening Scholarships, while 56 have so far been awarded Commonwealth Scholarships.
Speaking at the pre-departure reception in Abuja, Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Vicky Seymour, described the programmes as an investment not only in the beneficiaries but also in Nigeria’s future.
Seymour congratulated the scholars on their selection, noting that their success reflected their intellectual capacity, leadership potential and commitment to making a difference in their communities.
She urged the beneficiaries to maximise their exposure to world-class education, professional networks and international experiences in the UK and return home prepared to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.
According to her, the scholars have promising futures ahead of them, with the potential to follow in the footsteps of previous Chevening and Commonwealth alumni who have made significant contributions to Nigeria across various sectors.
“Your time in the UK should equip you with knowledge, skills and experiences that you can bring back to Nigeria to create lasting impact,” Seymour said.
Among the beneficiaries is Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, a Chevening Scholar who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex.
Yanayork described her selection as the culmination of a three-year journey marked by resilience and personal growth, saying the scholarship would enable her to deepen her commitment to human rights, good governance and inclusive development.
Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, who has a hearing impairment, will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter under the Commonwealth Scholarship.
Umar said the award was particularly significant because of its strong emphasis on inclusion, describing his scholarship journey as evidence of the power of resilience and the importance of building systems that accommodate people with diverse needs.
The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes are targeted at individuals with demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential and a strong commitment to contributing to the development of their home countries.
The UK Government said more than 5,237 Nigerians have passed through the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes, creating a substantial alumni network across Nigeria.
Many of the alumni have gone on to occupy influential positions and contribute to national development in government, business, academia, civil society and other sectors.
The programmes therefore continue to serve as an important platform for developing highly skilled professionals and cultivating future leaders capable of driving positive change in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, applications for the 2027–2028 Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes are already open, providing another opportunity for qualified Nigerians seeking advanced education, leadership development and international professional experience in the United Kingdom.
