The British High Commission has announced that from July 15, 2025, most Nigerian nationals applying for UK study or work visas will begin receiving electronic visas (eVisas) instead of the traditional physical visa stickers (vignettes) in their passports.
In a statement, the Commission said the move is part of the UK government’s transition to a fully digital immigration system, aimed at enhancing efficiency, security, and user convenience.
The new process applies to visa applications submitted on or after July 15. Those who apply before that date will continue under the current system and receive physical vignettes. Visitor visa applicants and dependants such as spouses or children will also continue receiving vignette stickers for now.
Successful applicants will be issued an eVisa — a secure online record of their immigration status. However, all applicants must still attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide biometric data.
Once a visa decision is made, applicants will receive an email with instructions on how to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa.
Commenting on the development, Gill Lever, Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission in Nigeria, said: “We’re making it easier and faster for Nigerians to travel to the UK… This is a further big step to a fully digital UK immigration system, making the process more secure, more efficient, and more convenient.”
The Commission also highlighted that eVisas have already replaced Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) for individuals granted leave over six months, and users can share their status securely with employers or landlords through the UKVI’s “View and Prove” service.
Applicants are advised to submit applications through the official UK government portal, attend a VAC for biometrics, and follow instructions in their visa decision notice to link their passport with their UKVI account if applicable.
