UN: Football remains a global force for unity, peace and cooperation

The United Nations has reaffirmed that football is more than a sport, describing it as a universal language that bridges cultures, transcends borders and strengthens community bonds worldwide.

Speaking at the commemoration of World Football Day held at the Astro Turf in Wuse, Abuja, the National Information Officer and Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Information Centre, Oluseyi Soremekun, said football continues to promote teamwork, resilience and shared purpose in ways that align with the core values of the United Nations.

The event, which featured a friendly football match and fitness activities, brought together participants to highlight the role of sport in advancing global development objectives.

Soremekun said the theme of the celebration reflected both “movement” and “momentum,” noting that movement represents the promotion of health and well-being, while momentum signifies collective progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He explained that World Football Day recognises the global influence of the sport and its contribution to peacebuilding, diplomacy and international cooperation, adding that football also serves as a platform for advocacy on climate action, education, health, inclusion and gender equality.

The UN official highlighted the organisation’s Football for the Goals (FFTG) initiative, describing it as a strategic platform that leverages the popularity of football to advance sustainability, human rights, equality and environmental awareness.

Quoting the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, Soremekun said the United Nations recognises the influence of football in amplifying awareness of the SDGs across global audiences.

He also disclosed that the UN recently named 16 football legends as FFTG Champions, including Nigerian football icon Daniel Amokachi, in recognition of their roles in promoting the initiative.

Participants were encouraged to view every pass, stride and goal as part of a broader commitment to building a more inclusive, peaceful and sustainable world.

“Whether on the field or in our daily work, we each have a role to play in advancing these ideals,” Soremekun said.

The event was organised by the United Nations Information Centre in collaboration with The Outsiders Hash House Harriers.
