The United Nations (UN) has reinforced its commitment to Nigeria’s progress toward peace, prosperity, and sustainable development, pledging ongoing support across critical sectors.
At a youth-focused event in Abuja on Thursday, commemorating the UN’s 79th anniversary, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, emphasized Nigeria’s central role in global peacekeeping and multilateralism, calling the nation a “rising star” on the international stage.
“Since joining the United Nations in 1960, Nigeria has continuously demonstrated a deep commitment to global peace,” Fall stated, highlighting the country’s longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts. He praised Nigeria’s resilience and innovation, describing the country as a “giant of Africa” and a pivotal force on the continent.
Fall outlined key collaboration areas with Nigeria, including education, hunger eradication, climate action, and gender equality, while also focusing on health, crime reduction, and digital economy initiatives aimed at youth empowerment.
As Nigeria pursues its Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Fall assured that “the UN is with Nigeria every step of the way.” He encouraged Nigeria’s youth to take advantage of opportunities in education, skills development, and innovation to lead the country toward a brighter future, aligning with the UN’s new “Pact for the Future” initiative.
In her remarks, UNDP Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah urged young Nigerians to harness the UN’s resources to build skills and contribute to national growth. Similarly, Nigeria’s Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment and empowering young people. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, also commended the UN’s unwavering support for Nigeria’s development and underscored the nation’s dedication to maintaining this partnership.
The event featured panel discussions, cultural presentations, and insights from key dignitaries, including Nigeria’s Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, heads of UN agencies, development partners, and young Nigerian leaders, all celebrating the shared goals of the UN and Nigeria.
