Update: NEMA rescues over 130 students from collapsed school building in Jos

In a coordinated search and rescue operation by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Nigeria, over 130 students were rescued from a collapsed school building in Jos, Plateau State, yesterday. The incident, which has shocked the local community, saw immediate mobilization of emergency services to save as many lives as possible.

Approximately 30 of the rescued students are currently receiving medical care for various injuries at Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos University Teaching Hospital, and AG Hospital. Medical personnel are working tirelessly to ensure these students receive the best possible care. Meanwhile, the remaining students, who suffered minor injuries or were unharmed, have been discharged and reunited with their families.

NEMA personnel remain on-site, providing essential support to the victims’ families and the medical teams at these hospitals. Psychological counselors and social workers are also available to help the students and their families cope with the traumatic experience.

Tragically, 22 fatalities were recorded in the disaster. This loss has deeply affected the community, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the deceased students and the Plateau State Government. Efforts are underway to provide the bereaved families with the support they need during this difficult time.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the collapse to prevent such tragedies in the future. The government has pledged to review and enforce building safety regulations to protect the lives of students and citizens across the country.
