The West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Pre-Election Mission to Ghana has intensified consultations with key stakeholders in preparation for the country’s December 7, 2024, general elections.
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who leads the mission, highlighted ongoing efforts to promote a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
Jonathan noted that the delegation has engaged in high-level discussions with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the National Election Security Taskforce, and the National Peace Council. These consultations are part of WAEF’s broader objective to ensure that the electoral process is conducted smoothly and in accordance with democratic principles.
In addition, the WAEF delegation met with key presidential candidates, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The forum also engaged with civil society organizations and media representatives to emphasize the importance of peaceful elections and democratic governance.
The forum expressed optimism that the 2024 elections would reaffirm Ghana’s position as a model of peaceful and credible elections in the West African region.
