Weak local government administration fuels insecurity in Nigeria, Says IPCR

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has identified the weakness of local government administration as a key contributor to the insecurity plaguing Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday during a press conference marking the 2024 International Day of Peace, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director General of IPCR, emphasized that poor governance at the grassroots level has led to widespread dissatisfaction. He traced the rise of violence, banditry, and kidnapping to this discontent, which initially manifested as peaceful agitation.

Ochogwu hailed the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments as a crucial step toward improving governance and addressing insecurity in Nigeria. He urged state governors to respect the ruling and empower local councils to function independently.

“With effective grassroots administration, much of the agitation would subside, and peace would return to the country,” Ochogwu stated. He called on governors to prioritize the proper management of local governments, stressing that many Nigerians live in these frontline areas and must feel the impact of governance for lasting peace to be achieved.

He also highlighted the significance of the 2024 International Day of Peace, whose theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” underscores the need for unity, dialogue, and reconciliation in communities worldwide. He noted that Nigeria, like many other nations, faces significant challenges such as poor governance, inequity, and violent conflicts, which have worsened insecurity.

To commemorate the Peace Day, IPCR has planned several events, including media discussions, art exhibitions, sports events, cultural displays, and a symbolic peace walk, all aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence.

Dr. Ochogwu commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts, particularly through the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’, to improve Nigerians’ lives and enhance national security. He urged all citizens to support the government’s peace initiatives, noting that everyone has a role to play in fostering peace and stability in the country.
