Wike pledges commitment to security, vows to continue demolition of shanties

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to securing lives and property in the nation’s capital.

Director of Press for the Minister’s Office, Anthony Ogunleye, disclosed that Minister Wike made this statement during an unannounced visit on Sunday, November 10, 2024, to a recently demolished shanty settlement in Wuye District.

During the visit, Wike underscored that no level of blackmail or intimidation would dissuade the administration from its mission to remove illegal structures that threaten public safety. Accompanied by senior officials and security agency heads, the minister inspected the demolished site near the Cadastral Zone B03 railway corridor, highlighting the site’s role in harboring criminal activity and its associated security risks.

“Our primary objective is to safeguard lives and properties and to position Abuja as one of the safest cities globally,” Wike stated, commending the dedicated efforts of security agencies who work tirelessly to maintain safety in Abuja.

Addressing claims of ulterior motives behind the demolition, Wike firmly stated, “No amount of blackmail, intimidation, or abuse will prevent us from fulfilling our responsibilities.” Nonetheless, he conveyed a willingness to engage with displaced residents, indicating plans for further discussions with community representatives to determine appropriate support measures.

The minister announced the establishment of a committee, consisting of security agency leaders, FCTA officials, and five community representatives, to develop guidelines for future actions in the area. He further instructed that no rebuilding take place on the demolished site until the government reaches a final decision on the land’s use.

Community representative Abba Garu appealed for temporary shelter and requested an alternative relocation site, highlighting the residents’ long-standing presence in the area.

This visit followed an emergency security meeting chaired by Minister Wike, reflecting the FCT Administration’s resolve to address security challenges across Abuja.
