On World Humanitarian Day 2024, the Moving Minds Alliance has called on global leaders and humanitarian organizations to prioritize the needs of young children and families affected by crises and displacement.
In a statement signed by the organization’s Network Communications Manager, Lola Ayanda, the alliance emphasized the critical importance of Early Childhood Development (ECD) in humanitarian settings. The organization, a global network of 39 member organizations, advocates for increased resources to support children in crisis, stressing that the early years of life are vital for a child’s future.
“The first years (0-8) are fundamental,” the statement read. “In crisis situations, young children face severe risks to their physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. These risks can be mitigated through integrated and holistic solutions that address the comprehensive needs of young children and their caregivers, including health, nutrition, protection, and early learning opportunities.”
On this World Humanitarian Day, Moving Minds Alliance is advocating for three key actions:
Increased Funding and Attention: Despite substantial evidence of the long-term positive impact of early interventions, ECD remains underfunded in humanitarian responses. Currently, only 1% of humanitarian funding is allocated to early learning, with a mere 2% dedicated to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives. The alliance urges donors and policymakers to increase resources for ECD programs in crisis settings.
Support for Local Actors: The alliance stresses the importance of supporting local solutions in humanitarian responses, ensuring that ECD interventions are culturally appropriate, sustainable, and do not displace successful local initiatives.
Inclusive National ECD Policies: Governments are urged to establish and fund comprehensive national ECD policies that include both refugee children and those in host communities. These policies should focus on providing quality, gender-transformative services, ensuring equal opportunities for all children.
Tricia Young, Director of Moving Minds Alliance, reiterated the organization’s commitment to these goals. “Every child has the right to a bright, safe, and healthy childhood and future, regardless of their circumstances,” she said. “We commend our colleagues worldwide for their tireless efforts and honor those who have lost their lives serving humanity. We call on the global community to stand in solidarity with young children in humanitarian crises, not just with words, but with action and, most importantly, with funds.”
Moving Minds Alliance concluded by reaffirming its commitment to fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovative approaches to support young children and families in crisis worldwide. The organization invites partners, donors, and policymakers to join in ensuring that no child is left behind due to humanitarian emergencies.
