Youth group decries lack of christian representation in NWDC board appointments

Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the absence of any Christian representation in the newly announced Governing Board of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), calling it a departure from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise of inclusive governance.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Isaac Abrak, and released on Saturday, the group criticized the appointments as a failure to ensure fair representation. “We are compelled to express our deep disappointment and concern over President Tinubu’s adjusted appointments to the NWDC board, which again exclude Christians. This omission contradicts his avowed commitment to inclusivity, equality, and fair representation,” Abrak stated.

The NCYP called for the immediate inclusion of Christians in the 11-member board, emphasizing the importance of balanced representation to maintain the commission’s credibility and deliver on its mandate. The group also urged the Senate to halt the inauguration of the appointees until the imbalance is addressed.

“This exclusion risks reigniting religious discord in a region that has worked hard to overcome insecurity and inter-religious strife,” the statement read. “As a group that supported and campaigned for the President, we strongly advise him to reconsider any actions that could undermine regional progress.”

The NCYP reiterated its call for urgent action, stressing that inclusive governance is key to ensuring the NWDC’s effectiveness and fostering unity in the North West.
