Zulum announces Maiduguri dry inland port to begin operations in six months

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has announced that the Maiduguri Dry Inland Port will commence operations within the next six months. The Governor made this declaration on Wednesday in Lagos while addressing journalists after a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Pius Akutah.

Governor Zulum expressed optimism that the establishment of the port would not only provide significant employment opportunities for the youth but also stimulate economic growth in Borno State. He emphasized the strategic importance of Maiduguri’s proximity to Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, highlighting that the port would enhance trans-border trade and foster stronger regional economic ties.

“Establishing the inland dry port in Maiduguri will bring many opportunities to the government and people of Borno State. It will generate employment, taking thousands of young children off the streets,” Zulum stated. “Our position as a border state with three neighboring countries makes this project crucial for boosting trade and improving our economy.”

The Governor also discussed ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to rehabilitate rail lines under President Bola Tinubu’s initiatives, noting that while these are underway, the current road infrastructure would be sufficient to support the port’s operations.

NSC Executive Secretary, Pius Akutah, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, underscoring the port’s potential to significantly enhance transborder trade under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). He expressed confidence in the Governor’s commitment to the project, citing Zulum’s proven track record in driving development in Borno State.

“This is a public-private partnership, and I believe the political will and determination shown by His Excellency will ensure the port becomes operational within the stated timeline,” Akutah concluded.
