Zulum dissolves cabinet ahead of elections

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has dissolved the State Executive Council, in a move widely interpreted as paving the way for cabinet members intending to contest in the forthcoming general elections.

The dissolution takes immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani. Commissioners have been directed to hand over the administration of their ministries to Permanent Secretaries on or before April 3, 2026.

Government sources indicated that the decision is aimed at providing an enabling environment for cabinet members who may wish to participate in partisan politics without conflicting with their official responsibilities.

Although the statement did not disclose how many commissioners are expected to seek elective positions, the development signals the onset of political realignments in Borno State ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Governor Zulum commended members of the dissolved council for their service, praising their dedication and contributions to governance, as well as to the state’s recovery and development efforts following years of insurgency.

He expressed appreciation for their commitment to public service and urged them to remain supportive of ongoing efforts to ensure stability and progress in the state.

In the interim, Permanent Secretaries will oversee the affairs of the ministries pending further decisions on the reconstitution of the cabinet.

Political analysts note that the move is likely to reshape the political landscape in Borno State, as prospective aspirants begin to position themselves ahead of the elections.
