Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended the Nigerian military for successfully repelling a Boko Haram attack on Kukawa town.
In a briefing on Monday, November 25, 2024, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, highlighted the operation’s success led by the troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK).
The insurgents, emboldened by a recent attack on Kareto on November 16, launched an assault on Kukawa, arriving on motorcycles and armed with rifles and RPGs. Despite breaching defensive trenches from the Gudumbali axis, the Nigerian military, backed by the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), responded decisively.
Troops from the 19 Brigade Cross Kauwa and 403 Amphibious Brigade Baga mobilized quickly, supported by the Nigerian Air Force’s precise air strikes. Interim assessments confirmed heavy losses for the insurgents, including fatalities and the seizure of vehicles and motorcycles.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their leadership and support. While hailing the troops for their bravery, he also mourned the losses, which included four soldiers and one civilian. Two CJTF members sustained non-fatal injuries.
The governor urged vigilance despite the victory, cautioning against potential retaliatory attacks by the insurgents. He called on citizens to continue providing intelligence to bolster the military’s efforts in combating threats to peace and security.
“This success is commendable,” said Zulum, “but we must remain alert and resolute to sustain our gains and prevent future attacks.”
