Zulum represents NGF chair at teachers’ summit, hails FG’s education reforms

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, on Monday represented the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) at the National Teachers’ Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he commended the Federal Government for its renewed investments in the education sector.

Governor Zulum praised the Federal Government’s policy direction, citing the introduction of the Students Loan Scheme under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the strengthening of key educational institutions and the upward review of salaries for federal university lecturers as concrete steps towards revitalising education in the country.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to educational development and human capital advancement in Borno State, stressing that sustained investment in teachers and learning infrastructure remains critical to national development.

The summit, convened by the Federal Ministry of Education, served as a strategic forum to assess the state of Nigeria’s education sector, reinforce policy implementation and formally launch “Edu Revamp”, an initiative aimed at enhancing teacher capacity, leveraging digital tools for 21st-century skills and fostering collaboration to improve learning outcomes nationwide.

At the event, 12 outstanding teachers were honoured for exceptional service to the nation. Six teachers—one from each of the six geopolitical zones—from the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), alongside six secondary school teachers, received cash awards of ₦25 million each. The Overall Best Teacher award went to Mr. Solanke Francis Taiwo, who received a ₦50 million cash prize.

Governor Zulum also commended the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for hosting the maiden National Teachers’ Summit at the Presidential Villa, describing the initiative as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising education.

He particularly applauded her sustained advocacy for girl-child education and her support through scholarships and grants aimed at reducing barriers to educational access for vulnerable Nigerians.

Zulum further praised the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, for what he described as focused and reform-oriented leadership in driving improvements across the sector.
