Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has expressed confidence that the most devastating phase of Boko Haram’s insurgency has passed, despite the recent uptick in attacks across the state. He made the assertion on Wednesday during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Shuaibu Waidi, in Maiduguri.
Governor Zulum, while acknowledging recent assaults on communities and security personnel, said the current situation remains far improved compared to the darkest years of the conflict. He urged residents to sustain their cooperation with the military, stressing that the fight against terrorism demands collective responsibility, vigilance and timely intelligence sharing.
“Yes, we have witnessed a series of attacks on our communities and security forces, but the worst is over,” Zulum said. “We shall continue to collaborate and provide the needed intelligence to our security forces to bring this madness to an end.”

Reflecting on past years when attacks were more frequent and severe, the governor said the trend now points toward a gradual return to stability. He commiserated with the Nigerian Army over recent operational setbacks, praising the courage and sacrifices of officers and soldiers whom he described as heroes committed to restoring peace.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, we stand with the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces. We will not take their sacrifice for granted,” he added.
In his remarks, the COAS, Lt. Gen. Waidi, thanked the governor for his sustained support and assured that the Army Headquarters would continue to supply the necessary resources for troops in the theatre of operations.
“We appreciate your support in Borno,” he said. “From the Army Headquarters, we will provide all the necessary resources to ensure they achieve their mission.”
The meeting was attended by senior government officials including the Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe; Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar; and the Special Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullahi Ishaq (Rtd).
