The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Minna Operations Office, has confirmed the deaths of 13 people following a boat accident in Niger State on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
According to a situation report from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the mishap occurred around 11:45 a.m. when a boat carrying 39 passengers and 50 bags of rice from Shattai in Guni Ward, Munya Local Government Area, capsized en route to Kwatan, Zumba Market in Shiroro Local Government Area.
Rescue efforts led to the recovery of 26 survivors, including the boat operator. One of the survivors is currently receiving medical treatment at the General Hospital in Kuta.
Thirteen fatalities have been confirmed—comprising eight women, three men, and two children. So far, eight bodies have been recovered and buried, while five passengers remain unaccounted for.
NEMA is working closely with NSEMA, local authorities, and community volunteers to sustain the ongoing search and rescue operations.
