Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested eleven individuals for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Akwa Ibom State.

The suspects, comprising seven Chinese nationals and four Nigerians, were apprehended on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in Emem-Asuk community, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, for operating without the required mining licences.

The Chinese nationals were identified as Yang Chaobao (32), Zhong Dun Yi (33), Cheng Jiang (35), Zhong Dun Long (37), Pan Peiming (33), Lai Yiping (37), and Zhu Lekun (35). Their Nigerian collaborators include David Israel (18), Jonah Bartholomew Jim (24), Samuel Samuel Timothy (20), and a 23-year-old female interpreter, Comfort Gabriel Ajaga.

According to the EFCC, the suspects were operating two illegal mining sites and were apprehended while installing equipment at a second location. Investigations revealed that they were already extracting ilmenite, locally known as “black sand,” from the first site.

During interrogation, the female interpreter claimed her only role was language support. “I am a student studying Chinese at a Learning Centre in Anambra State. I work with them only as a translator,” she stated.

The suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
