Funeral rites have been held for the 25 farmers killed in a brutal bandit attack on Sauna Ruwan Gora Ward in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, as fresh calls mount on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to end the worsening violence targeting rural communities.
According to Amnesty International Nigeria, the victims were reportedly slaughtered on Tuesday, July 21, when heavily armed gunmen stormed farmlands in the community and opened fire at close range on farmers working in their fields. Several others escaped with life-threatening injuries.
The International human right group said the attack has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara, where repeated assaults by armed bandits have left many rural communities living in constant fear of fresh attacks.
Observers say the latest killings underscore the persistent insecurity in the state despite repeated military operations aimed at dismantling criminal groups operating across the region.
The fact that the attack occurred in a community located about 16 kilometres from Talata Mafara town has heightened fears that even areas close to major population centres remain vulnerable to armed violence.
Residents across Zamfara have continued to describe a recurring pattern in which armed groups allegedly issue threats to villages—sometimes through telephone calls—demanding large sums of money or threatening attacks, kidnappings or killings if their demands are not met.
The persistent insecurity has also taken a heavy toll on agricultural activities, with many farmers reportedly abandoning farmlands for fear of being attacked. In several communities, residents say they can no longer venture deep into the bush to cultivate their crops, worsening food insecurity and economic hardship.
Security analysts warn that unless stronger measures are taken to secure farming communities, the violence could further undermine livelihoods and agricultural production in one of Nigeria’s key farming regions.
Stakeholders have urged the authorities to review existing security strategies, strengthen intelligence gathering, improve the protection of rural communities and ensure that those responsible for the killings are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The latest tragedy adds to the growing toll of violence in Zamfara State, where recurring attacks by bandits continue to pose a major security and humanitarian challenge despite ongoing government efforts to restore peace.
