82 Division denies misconduct allegations in Imo community

The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has strongly refuted allegations that its personnel were involved in burning homes, looting property, and harassing civilians in Umualumaku, Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the Division described the claims as false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to undermine its peacekeeping efforts in the region.

“No soldier under the command of 82 Division was involved in any misconduct. Our troops operate under strict rules of engagement and a professional code of conduct,” the statement read.

The Division attributed the allegations to criminal elements attempting to discredit the military and erode public trust in its operations. It reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the Constitution, protecting law-abiding citizens, and working in partnership with other security agencies, community leaders, and civil society groups to maintain peace and security in the region.

The military also urged the media and the public to verify information before dissemination, warning that misinformation and disinformation are tools commonly used by those seeking to destabilize the area.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its resolve to investigate and support the prosecution of anyone found responsible for criminal acts in the affected community.
