The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated disciplinary proceedings against an officer accused of extorting the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000.00) from a car buyer named Muhammad Dahiru Ahmad along the Mokwa-Jebba Road in Niger State.
Comptroller Dalha Chedi, overseeing the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’ Kaduna, formally handed over the implicated officer to the Assistant Provost Marshal (APM) of the Customs Police Unit in Kaduna, at the Unit’s Headquarters on Monday, February 26, 2024.
Addressing members of the press, Comptroller Chedi confirmed that the officer in question served within the Unit’s Mokwa Patrol Team in Niger State, and the alleged incident took place on Thursday, February 22, 2024, as reported by the complainant.
Promptly upon receiving information about the alleged misconduct, Comptroller Chedi instructed the Customs Police Unit responsible for enforcing discipline within the Service to apprehend the officer and transfer him to the Unit’s Headquarters in Kaduna for further investigation. The complainant was also invited to contribute to the inquiry process.
Comptroller Chedi emphasized the Nigeria Customs Service’s firm stance against such misconduct, underlining the diligence and firmness of the disciplinary committee. The implicated officer has been handed over to the APM Customs Police Unit for further investigation, with the findings to be forwarded to the NCS Headquarters for necessary action by the Nigeria Customs Service Board, the authority responsible for handling appointments, promotions, and disciplinary matters concerning senior officers.
Expressing condemnation of the alleged act, Comptroller Chedi assured the public that the investigation’s outcome would be transparently communicated to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We are deeply concerned and assure the general public that the matter will be treated with the deserved vigor, decisiveness, and transparency,” he stated.
He also urged the public to continue providing invaluable support to the service in its commitment to upholding integrity and professionalism.
