ISWAP commanders surrender as “Operation Hadin Kai” intensifies pressure in North East

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have recorded a significant breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the North East following the surrender of two high-profile commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to Acting Media Information Officer Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI Lieut. Col. Haruna M Sani, the surrendered insurgents, identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar, turned themselves in to troops on 8 June 2026 and are currently in military custody undergoing profiling and debriefing.

Preliminary military assessments indicate that both individuals held strategic positions within the ISWAP hierarchy, operating within the Mangari axis of the Lake Chad Basin. Ismail Mohammed was reportedly a close associate of a senior ISWAP leader, Baa Shuwa, and is believed to have possessed detailed knowledge of the group’s command structure and operational activities.

Abu Umar, on the other hand, was described as a key explosives specialist within the terrorist network, with responsibilities linked to the fabrication and maintenance of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and other combat support systems used by the group.

Military sources also indicated that another high-ranking ISWAP figure, identified as Mohammed Khalifa, a member of the group’s Shura Council, was neutralised during recent coordinated operations in the theatre.

The development is being viewed by military authorities as a major setback for Islamic State West Africa Province, given the operational experience and technical expertise of the surrendered commanders.

According to operational assessments, the defections reflect increasing pressure from sustained offensive operations by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, supported by allied precision strikes targeting insurgent enclaves across the region.

Military authorities further noted that continued pressure has contributed to declining morale within terrorist ranks, disrupting command structures and forcing increased surrenders across affected areas.

Operation Hadin Kai reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining sustained offensive pressure on remaining terrorist elements, with a focus on dismantling leadership structures, degrading operational capabilities and restoring stability to communities across the North East.
