President Bola Tinubu has appealed to members of the National Assembly to exercise prudence in summoning heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) before parliamentary committees.
According to Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the President stated this during the breaking of Ramadan fast on Wednesday in Abuja alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and the House leadership.
He stressed the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability in governance while cautioning against excessive disruptions to governmental operations.
While acknowledging the critical role of oversight in governance, Tinubu highlighted the potential for excessive summoning of officials to disrupt operations and hinder service delivery to citizens. He urged lawmakers to exercise discretion in their oversight functions, emphasizing the importance of allowing officials to focus on their primary duties.
The President stated, “I have been observing various committees summoning ministers and heads of agencies. I have raised concerns to the Speaker to allow room for officials to fulfill their responsibilities. While oversight is essential, we must ensure that it does not unduly impede the functioning of our institutions.”
Tinubu proposed alternative methods for oversight, such as accepting representatives in some instances or reviewing documentation, to minimize disruptions to ministry operations. He underscored the need for collaboration between the legislative and executive branches, urging lawmakers to consider the broader national interest in their actions.
Expressing confidence in the National Assembly’s ability to promote good governance, Tinubu commended the existing cordial relationship between the executive and legislature, which has facilitated the expeditious passage of bills aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.
He urged legislators not to forget their constituencies and encouraged them to use the holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to show compassion and support to the less privileged in society.
Regarding the recent killing of soldiers in Delta State, Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and pledged to ensure they receive a befitting burial and national honors. He emphasized the need to honor the sacrifices made by servicemen and women in defending the nation.
In response, Speaker Abbas emphasized the significance of forgiveness, generosity, and prayers during Ramadan, calling for unity in the nation and continued support for President Tinubu. Reflecting on the first ten months of the administration, he highlighted the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislature for the progress of the country.
Chief Ajuri Ngelale reiterated the President’s commitment to fostering a harmonious relationship between the branches of government and ensuring effective governance for the betterment of Nigeria.
