World Malaria Day:USAID deputy Mission Director Sara Werth affirms U.S. government’s commitment to Nigeria’s malaria battle

In commemoration of World Malaria Day, Sara Werth, the Deputy Mission Director of USAID Nigeria, reiterated the unwavering support of the United States government in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against malaria. Highlighting a longstanding collaboration, Werth emphasized the pivotal role of the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) since 2011 in partnering with Nigeria to combat the disease.

Over the years, the PMI has significantly bolstered Nigeria’s malaria control efforts, contributing a staggering $914 million to date, with an additional $73 million allocated in 2023 alone. Utilizing these funds, USAID, in conjunction with PMI funding and programs, has facilitated the distribution of vital resources across Nigerian communities.

In the past year, USAID’s efforts have yielded the delivery of 13.4 million bed nets, 6 million fast-acting medicines, and 11.8 million Malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests to clinics and communities throughout Nigeria. Furthermore, in 2023, over 7,200 health workers received comprehensive training aimed at enhancing their proficiency in malaria detection, treatment, and the provision of crucial care within their respective communities.

Werth’s reaffirmation of the U.S. government’s steadfast commitment underscores the collective determination to mitigate the impact of malaria in Nigeria, a country significantly affected by the disease. Through sustained collaboration and strategic interventions, the partnership between the United States and Nigeria aims to continue making significant strides towards eradicating malaria and improving public health outcomes in the region.
