In a significant diplomatic gesture, His Excellency Sune Krogstrup, the Ambassador of Denmark to Nigeria, visited the Naval Headquarters in Nigeria on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. During the visit, Ambassador Krogstrup highlighted Denmark’s reliance on the security of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) for the safe transit of its extensive commercial shipping lines, emphasizing the critical role played by the Nigerian Navy (NN) in maintaining the safety of sea lanes in the region.
Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian Navy for its efforts in safeguarding maritime activities in the Gulf of Guinea, Ambassador Krogstrup underscored the importance of continued cooperation and support in ensuring the security of commercial vessels traversing these waters.
In response, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) affirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to its leadership role in enhancing maritime safety within the Gulf of Guinea. The CNS reiterated the NN’s dedication to upholding its responsibilities in safeguarding the region’s maritime domain and pledged to maintain and strengthen collaboration with international partners, including Denmark, to uphold maritime security in the area.

During the discussions, both the Nigerian Navy and Danish authorities recognized the imperative of maintaining robust international relations within the existing maritime security framework. Emphasizing the mutual benefits of cooperation in maritime security, they affirmed their commitment to sustaining and enhancing collaboration under established maritime security architectures.
The visit concluded with a ceremonial exchange, symbolizing the goodwill and cooperation between Nigeria and Denmark in maritime security efforts. The Chief of the Naval Staff presented Ambassador Krogstrup with a commemorative plaque, symbolizing the appreciation for Denmark’s acknowledgment of Nigeria’s efforts in maritime security, followed by a photo-session to mark the occasion.
