The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has reaffirmed that democracy remains Nigeria’s most dependable pathway to lasting peace, national unity and sustainable development, calling on both leaders and citizens to strengthen their commitment to democratic principles and institutions.
In a statement issued ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, the Director-General of the institute, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, said the annual commemoration serves not only as a reminder of a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history but also as a reflection of the sacrifices made in the struggle for democratic governance.
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic experience continues to underscore the importance of accountability, inclusiveness and effective governance as essential foundations for peace, stability and national progress.
Ochogwu stressed that democracy can only achieve its full potential when public institutions operate transparently and efficiently, while citizens actively participate in and support programmes aimed at advancing national development.
He noted that government policies, institutions and processes must remain firmly anchored on democratic values and focused on improving the welfare of citizens, adding that public responsibility and civic engagement are critical to democratic consolidation.
The IPCR Director-General also highlighted the role of democracy in shaping Nigeria’s international engagements, noting that democratic governance occupies a prominent position in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda.
He said Nigeria’s commitment to democratic ideals is reflected not only in its domestic governance framework but also in its advocacy for reforms in global institutions, including calls for a more representative and responsive United Nations system.
“At both the national and international levels, democracy must remain inclusive, participatory and responsive to the needs of the people,” Ochogwu stated, emphasizing that citizens should be active participants in governance rather than passive beneficiaries.
He maintained that effective democratic institutions and meaningful citizen participation are critical to promoting social cohesion, strengthening national stability and fostering peaceful coexistence.
Against the backdrop of persistent security and socio-economic challenges in parts of the country, the institute called for increased investment in peacebuilding initiatives, dialogue and national unity, warning that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere of violence, division and mistrust.
The institute urged Nigerians to embrace democracy not merely as a system of government but as a culture rooted in tolerance, mutual respect, inclusion and shared responsibility.
It further noted that the enduring significance of June 12 should inspire renewed efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, improve service delivery and promote justice, equity and peaceful coexistence across the country.
Reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of peace and democratic governance, the IPCR said Nigeria’s democratic future depends on the collective resolve of leaders and citizens to uphold the values of accountability, inclusiveness and national unity, which it described as indispensable to achieving lasting peace and development.
