Witness testifies on Agunloye’s N5.2m payment in $6b Mambila power project fraud case

A witness in the trial of former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, detailed before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the FCT High Court how multiple transfers amounting to N5.2 million were made to Agunloye by Jide Sotirin, an employee of Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd. The case, prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), involves charges of corruption and fraudulent award of the $6 billion Mambila Power Project contract.

Adebayo Ilori, a compliance officer with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), testified that in October 2022, the bank received an EFCC request for account details and documents related to Agunloye and Sotirin. Ilori confirmed the authenticity of the documents provided to the EFCC, which were subsequently admitted as court exhibits.

Ilori further revealed that Sotirin, who managed the account, transferred N3.6 million to Agunloye on August 10, 2019, N500,000 on October 22, 2019, and N1.121 million on November 13, 2019.

The trial continues on June 11, 2024, for cross-examination.
