Eight officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have received special promotions in recognition of their bravery and professionalism during a recent operation targeting drug traffickers on the Lagos waterways. The promotions were approved by NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd).
The officers, all part of the Marine Command, were honored for their exceptional conduct during an operation to intercept canoes and boats smuggling illicit drugs from Ghana to Nigeria. The operation, which took place on August 23, 2024, involved the seizure of 60 jumbo bags of Ghanaian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 2,400 kg. The team also apprehended a suspect, Hambo Tete, a 30-year-old Ghanaian national.
During a ceremony at the agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja, Marwa highlighted the significance of the officers’ actions, stating that their bravery in the face of adversity demonstrated the effectiveness of the reforms and training that have been implemented within the NDLEA. He emphasized that the agency is committed to rewarding hard work and sacrifice through initiatives such as the bi-annual Command Awards and special promotions.
“These officers showed remarkable courage and dedication in thwarting an attempt by a criminal gang to smuggle illicit drugs into the country,” Marwa said. “Their actions send a clear message to drug traffickers that our waterways, like our airports and land borders, are not safe routes for their illegal activities.”
Marwa also thanked the UK Home Office International Operations for their support in strengthening the NDLEA’s Marine Command with training and equipment. He urged all NDLEA personnel to continue upholding the agency’s standards and to remain vigilant both on and off duty.
The promoted officers, led by Dick Aaron Dick, expressed their gratitude to Marwa for his leadership and for transforming the NDLEA into an efficient and results-driven organization. Dick noted that the recognition would inspire them and their colleagues to continue excelling in their duties.
The officers promoted include: Dick Aaron Dick, Alabi Mayowa, Gabriel Ubokikwan, Aso Daniel John, Abdul Emmanuel Sule, Ngabolo Victor Sonpano, Jonah Emmanuel Sule, and Membe Timipa Gabriel.
