President Bola Tinubu was warmly welcomed by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London on Wednesday for a private meeting that underscored the longstanding and valued relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, this marks their first meeting since their encounter at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year, with the latest discussion held at the King’s request.
The leaders engaged in discussions on global and regional issues of mutual concern, with a strong emphasis on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change. They explored potential avenues for collaboration ahead of the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to tackling climate change while balancing the nation’s energy security needs. He also emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to embrace global strategies for environmental sustainability. During their dialogue, both leaders exchanged ideas on innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, expressing a shared interest in enhancing partnerships by leveraging Nigeria’s influential role in Africa and the Commonwealth.
