Botswana seeks stronger ties with Nigeria, aims to learn entrepreneurial spirit

The Botswana High Commissioner to Nigeria, Miss Philda Nani Kereng, has called for enhanced bilateral relations between Botswana and Nigeria, emphasizing her country’s eagerness to learn from Nigeria’s entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Monday, marking Botswana’s 58th Independence anniversary, Kereng highlighted her mission to deepen cooperation between both nations through tangible projects and business collaborations.

“Nigeria is a critical partner for us,” said Kereng, noting the long-standing relationship between the two countries. She expressed Botswana’s desire to engage in active projects that will drive trade and mutual growth, citing Nigeria’s renowned enterprise culture as a key area for learning. “We have seen Nigerians go against all odds to achieve their business goals. This mindset is something we want to bring home,” she added.

The High Commissioner acknowledged Nigeria’s success in sectors such as technology, trade, and the creative industries, stating that Botswana hopes to replicate some of these achievements. “We have talented youth in Botswana, and we’re keen to develop them for industries like film, fashion, music, and culinary arts, areas where Nigeria excels,” Kereng said.

In terms of trade, Kereng admitted that current exchange between both nations remains limited but highlighted the potential for growth, particularly in natural products, textiles, and skill exchanges. She also mentioned that Nigeria could benefit from Botswana’s expertise in agriculture, specifically in beef production.

Botswana, known for exporting high-quality beef to Europe, is eager to collaborate with Nigeria on improving animal husbandry. “We want to share our knowledge in livestock rearing and quality beef production, an area where Botswana has excelled for decades,” she stated.

Kereng, who has been in Nigeria for four months, affirmed that fostering trade, investment, and cultural exchange would be her primary focus, aiming to create easier business dealings for both nations.

“We believe cultural exchange is vital for strengthening ties between our countries. By sharing customs and values, we can deepen mutual understanding and cooperation,” she concluded.
