Again Amnesty International demands urgent investigation into deadly Sokoto air strike

Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation of the deadly air strikes carried out by the Nigerian military on Christmas Day in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The organization described the strikes as unlawful, excessive, and indicative of a troubling pattern of using military tactics in law enforcement scenarios, often with catastrophic consequences for civilians.

“Launching air raids is not a legitimate method of law enforcement by any standard,” Amnesty International stated in its release. “This reckless use of deadly force is both outrageous and illegal, exposing a shocking disregard for the lives of civilians the military is supposed to protect.”

The air strikes reportedly targeted two communities in Silame LGA, leaving entire families dead and reducing homes to ashes. Eyewitness accounts revealed harrowing scenes of villagers burned alive in fires ignited by the strikes. Many civilians were killed while seeking shelter inside their homes, underscoring the devastating human toll of the incident.

Amnesty International highlighted that such operations violate international humanitarian law, which mandates that all feasible precautions must be taken to protect civilians during military operations. The organization called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the decision-making process and execution of the air strikes, holding accountable those responsible for the tragic loss of life.

“The Christmas Day air strikes in Sokoto are yet another tragic example of the Nigerian military employing deadly force inappropriately,” the statement added. “This approach to law enforcement raises serious questions about the military’s adherence to international legal standards and its commitment to protecting civilian lives.”

This incident is the latest in a series of military operations that have drawn criticism for their lack of precision and disproportionate impact on civilian populations. Amnesty International has repeatedly raised concerns about the Nigerian armed forces’ conduct in addressing security challenges, urging greater transparency, accountability, and adherence to human rights standards.

As the nation grapples with insecurity, including banditry and insurgency, there are growing calls for a reevaluation of the military’s strategies to ensure that they align with the principles of proportionality and civilian protection. Advocacy groups and community leaders have joined Amnesty International in demanding justice for the victims of the Sokoto air strikes and the implementation of reforms to prevent future tragedies.

The Nigerian government has yet to respond to Amnesty International’s statement. However, public outcry over the incident is mounting, with demands for a comprehensive investigation and a clear commitment to preventing similar occurrences.
