In a major step towards deepening domestic gas utilization, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners have commenced the construction of five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Thursday, marked a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda.

According to Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd, Abuja Olufemi Soneye, the five mini-LNG plants—NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete—have a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d). NNPC Ltd holds stakes in three of the projects, with 90% in Prime LNG, 50% in NGML/Gasnexus LNG, and 10% in BUA LNG, while Highland LNG and LNG Arete are developed by private investors.

Speaking at the event, NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, underscored the significance of natural gas in Nigeria’s industrialization and economic diversification. He highlighted the role of the mini-LNG plants in increasing energy access, creating jobs, and boosting the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“These facilities will enhance gas transportation over long distances, providing a cleaner and more affordable energy source for households, industries, and businesses, particularly in regions lacking gas pipeline infrastructure,” Kyari stated.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the initiative as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging natural gas for economic growth, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing national prosperity.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed gratitude for the investment, emphasizing its potential to create jobs and stimulate local economic growth. He pledged the state government’s support through security provisions, manpower supply, and collaboration with host communities.

NNPC Ltd Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, hailed the initiative as a major advancement in Nigeria’s energy landscape, aligning with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He reiterated NNPC Ltd’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions that drive industrialization and economic security.
