The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr. Moses Thomas Sule, along with 14 former lawmakers, over allegations of money laundering and procurement fraud.
Operatives of the EFCC’s Makurdi Zonal Directorate carried out the arrests on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, following petitions from concerned citizens alleging that the former legislators violated the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and abused official procurement procedures during their brief six-month tenure.
The arrested lawmakers include: Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Jwe Philip Gwom, Thomas Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok, Agbalak Ibrahim, Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren, and Paul Datugun.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the state government procured luxury vehicles worth approximately ₦2.5 billion for the lawmakers during their time in office. The vehicles, which were designated as official government property, were not returned after the legislators left office. Efforts by the state government to recover the vehicles have so far been unsuccessful, forcing the procurement of new vehicles for the current Assembly members at an additional cost of ₦2 billion.
According to the EFCC, the former Speaker and his colleagues will be formally charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
