Kebbi attack leaves 20 dead, Amnesty International urges action

Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the killing of 20 people by gunmen in Fesken Rafi village, Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, describing the incident as another indication of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement issued following the attack, the rights organisation said more details were emerging from the deadly assault, which claimed 20 lives earlier this week. It noted that families of the victims were still mourning their losses, while efforts continued to locate several persons reported missing after the attack.

According to Amnesty International, the recurring attacks by armed groups are causing widespread displacement of communities, depriving residents of their means of livelihood and undermining their fundamental right to life.

The organisation called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the resurgence of insecurity across the country, arguing that recent attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups demonstrate that current security measures have failed to stem the violence.

“President Tinubu must fulfil his promises to Nigerians and urgently address the resurgence of the nation’s endemic security crisis,” Amnesty International said, adding that the escalating attacks highlight shortcomings in the government’s security strategy.

The group further stressed that under international human rights law, Nigerian authorities have a responsibility to protect lives, investigate the killings, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Amnesty International also urged the government to provide victims and affected communities with access to justice and effective remedies, lamenting what it described as the authorities’ repeated failure to meet their obligations to safeguard citizens from violent attacks.
