IGP, UNREC forge stronger partnership to curb arms proliferation

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Thursday, August 7, 2025, hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against illicit arms proliferation.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the delegation, led by Dr. Adedeji Ebo, included UNREC Director Mr. Anselme Yabouri, UNREC staff member Miss Grub Nolwenn, AIG Thomas Nebhon, and Lt. Col. O.N. Okon from NCCSALW. The Force Management Team, comprising all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and the Force Secretary, was also in attendance.

Discussions focused on enhancing inter-agency cooperation to stem the inflow of illegal small arms and light weapons, which fuel criminal activities and insecurity in the country. The UN delegation commended the Nigeria Police Force for its ongoing efforts, particularly in high-risk areas, and stressed the need for coordinated intelligence, tracking systems, and targeted disarmament initiatives.

IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to intensifying operations aimed at mopping up illicit arms and prosecuting those involved in trafficking. He highlighted the successful recovery of thousands of firearms and ammunition and pledged to sustain collaborative efforts with both local and international partners to dismantle networks responsible for arms smuggling.

He further assured that under his leadership, the Nigeria Police Force will continue to adopt intelligence-driven strategies and strengthen information-sharing frameworks to enhance national security and public safety.
